WHAT TO LOOK FOR

Here are some tips to help when you are thinking about building a garage: 

TIP #1: Always go with 2X6 walls in your garage. Some contractors will give you a price based on 2X4 walls. Although this is legal by building codes, it would not be for your house. This is because 2X6 is more structurally sound and also because you can not get more than an R13 insulation value. You may not want to insulate now, but if you want to down the line, you will be stuck with R-13 unless you do a lot of work! With 2X6 walls, you get strength and a better insulation value.

TIP #2: Plan for the specific needs of your new garage and then add some. Go over with your contractor what you need the space for. A good way to see if everything will fit is to mark it out on the ground and put your items within the "box" that you can create with a can of spray paint. It is much easier to add before the building part takes place.

TIP #3: If you are given references, as them if you can stop by and see the garage. A lot more homeowners are willing to have you stop by and take a peek. The worst they can say is no, but if they say yes, sometimes you can see for yourself the quality and you can ask more questions.
